Match a photo's colours to public domain art

Drop in a photo of a room, a fabric swatch or a sunset, and this finds artworks whose palettes sit closest to it, measured in perceptual colour space rather than by eye. Every result is free to download and print.

How the matching works

Your image is reduced to a small thumbnail and its pixels are clustered into five representative colours using k-means in CIE L*a*b* space, a colour model built so that equal numerical distances look like equal differences to the eye, which plain RGB does not. Every artwork in the index was measured the same way, so a close score here means the two genuinely look alike, not that their hex codes happen to be near each other.

Matching is symmetric: each of your colours is compared to its nearest counterpart in the artwork, and each of the artwork's to yours. That stops a painting from scoring well just because one of its many tones happens to hit one of yours.
